Hi, my name is Benjamin Franklin. I am 81 years old I am the oldest delegate to arrive at the constitutional convention. I am a politician, writer, musician, scientist, and an inventor. I am from Boston, Massachusetts. It is 1787 and as a framer it is my responsibility to show up at the Constitutional convention to give my opinion on what would make a more perfect nation. I came here because I think that the welfare of future generations is very important as well as our generation. I want to make the beautiful United States of America a better fairer place for all.  I expected to get there and for all of us eager delegates to converse and decide what shall be done at the constitutional convention to make a more perfect nation for the next generations. However, it was a different tale, when I arrived there was so many people and I was the oldest and when it was all cleared up and organized we realized Georgia didn’t arrive at all! Thomas Jefferson didn’t arrive he was in France serving as the U.S. minister and John Adams didn’t show because he was serving as a U.S. minister to Great Britain!  Also, Edmund Randolph, George Mason, and Elbridge Gerry wouldn’t sign because there was no Bill of Rights, you can’t always get exactly what you want! Also, Madison just kept going on and on about his plans, which were OK but a little too radical and others kept screaming that we don’t need change! Then why’d they come to the convention? But something good did happen, the Great Compromise saved the whole convention, so three cheers for Roger Sherman! Being here is important to me because I think that I can help the other delegates to make our nation more perfect for all people no matter what colony they are from and for people who are born in the next million or so years. I want to make sure that our nation is never ruled by a tyrant because I never felt it was unfair when we were ruled no dictated I should say. I also don’t think each state should have their own independent government because if all the colonies in the United States of America are not united we can disagree and maybe even go to war which would make us seem weak to England who might try to take over again.  A lot people thought since I arrived being carried in a sedan chair (an enclosed chair that is borne on poles by the shoulders of 4 convicts) and because I’m an older gentleman that I do not have good input to add into fixing our constitution, well that is not true because since I have been around a long time I am probably the most wise and has the most life experience. I feel the final outcome was a success because I believe that ever delegate and colony had at least a teeny piece of what they thought was right put in the constitution and I think it was fair due to the great compromise. But I still think that we should have found the money to hire a chaplain so the session could be opened with a prayer.
Signed,
Benjamin Franklin
